MAINE
The photographs in this section were taken on Lake Messalonskee ("Snow Pond") and Long Pond which comprise two of the seven, interconnected lakes that make up the Belgrade Lakes system located between Augusta and Waterville Maine. These lakes support a healthy population of Loons, Eagles, Osprey, and an occasional nesting pair of Sandhill Cranes which are represented in this section. The Belgrade Lakes also are seasonal home to Great Blue Herons, and a wide variety of other birds and wildlife.
Lake Messalonskee features a significant wetland area of more than 1,300 acres known as the Messalonskee Lake Marsh located at its southern end in the town of Belgrade. It is one of the largest nesting sites for the rare Black Tern along with Least Bittern, Eagles, Osprey, Great Blue Herons, and Sandhill Cranes. It is also one of the most productive nesting locations for the Common Loon.
