CALIFORNIA
The photographs in this section were taken at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates in Palos Verde, California. They include two closely related species of Hummingbirds, the Rufous Hummingbird and the Allen's Hummingbird. These species are almost impossible to differentiate in the field. The Allen's Hummingbird has a very restricted range breeding solely along the west coast from Oregon to Southern California. In addition to be very similar in appearance, the two species occasionally hybridize. The South Coast Botanic Garden was the first such garden in the United States to be built on top of a landfill. It is home to a wide variety of other bird species as well as a magnificent assortment of flowering plants and trees.
