WELCOME TO THROUGH MY LENS
I am a nature photographer with a particular interest in birds. I grew up in Eastern Massachusetts where I've lived most of my life and where we still own a home. We were fortunate to co-own a summer home in the Belgrade lakes region of Maine for 25 years where I first encountered the remarkable "Common Loon" which sparked my interest in bird photography. We sold that home and now own a second home on Florida's west coast which affords us easy access to some of the greatest bird watching and bird photography locations on the planet.
Most of the images in this gallery were shot between 2024 and 2026 in Maine, Massachusetts, California, Florida and several locations outside the United States. As time permits, I hope to include images made before 2024. Also, there is one section under the New England tab that I have reserved for one of my favorite flowers: the Pink Lotus Flower.
My style is primarily documentary. I try to record moments that reveal some aspect of a bird or animal's behavior that cannot be appreciated fully without the aid of a camera. I also have a special interest in capturing expressive behavior in birds and animals. Birds have a limbic system in their brains, and while it differs from the structures found in mammals, there is evidence that the two systems are functionally equivalent. In brief, birds have feelings and know how to express them.
Since the summer of 2025, I have been shooting exclusively with an OM 1 Mark ii camera and primarily an OM System 150-400mm f/4.5 lens with a built-in 1.25 TC. This is an outstanding system for wildlife photography and much more. Previously, I shot with Nikon gear. I process my photographs using software such as Adobe Lightroom, DxO Pure Raw 6, Topaz Labs, and On1.
Like all photographers, I have benefitted from the advice and experience shared by other photographers especially the members of the Gateway Camera Club of Framingham, MA [www.gatewaycameraclub.org], and the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists [www.masscamnats.org]. I can't think of a better way to improve your photography than to become an active member of a camera club.
